A congested baby is a miserable baby — and a miserable parent. Babies are obligate nasal breathers, meaning they breathe almost exclusively through their noses in the first few months, which makes any nasal congestion significantly more distressing for them than it would be for an older child or adult.
Why Babies Get Congested
Newborn nasal passages are narrow and easily blocked by the normal mucus the nasal lining produces, by amniotic fluid residue in the first weeks, by the dry air of UAE air conditioning, or by viral respiratory infections. Identifying the cause helps choose the right approach: newborn congestion in the first 2–3 weeks is usually positional and self-resolving; recurrent congestion beyond 3 months warrants medical attention.
The Saline Solution
Saline nasal drops or spray — sodium chloride solution available over-the-counter from any UAE pharmacy — are the first-line treatment for infant nasal congestion. They work by softening thick mucus, moisturising dry nasal membranes, and making congestion easier to clear. Use a preservative-free isotonic saline designed for infants. Lay your baby on their back, tilt the head gently, and instil 2–3 drops into each nostril before feeds and before sleep.
The Nasal Aspirator
After instilling saline, a nasal aspirator removes the loosened mucus. Bulb aspirators (the rubber squeeze bulbs) are widely available but less effective than electric or mouth-operated aspirators. Mouth-operated aspirators — where you apply gentle suction through a tube — give you far more control over the pressure and are significantly more effective. You will not get mucus in your mouth; there is a filter in the tube. These are worth every dirham for a congested baby.
Positioning for Breathing
Elevate the head end of your baby's sleep surface slightly — place a folded towel under the mattress (not under the baby; never add soft items to the sleep surface). This gentle incline encourages mucus to drain away from the back of the throat rather than pooling. For feeding, an upright position reduces the discomfort of congestion during nursing or bottle feeding significantly.
Humidification
UAE air conditioning is extremely drying. A cool-mist humidifier in your baby's room — run during sleep — adds moisture to the air and prevents nasal passages from drying out, which worsens congestion. Use distilled or filtered water in the humidifier and clean it thoroughly twice weekly to prevent mould and bacteria. Place it across the room, not directly beside the crib.
What Not to Do
Never use decongestant nasal drops or sprays designed for adults or older children in babies under 2 years — these can cause a dangerous rebound effect and cardiovascular side effects in infants. Never use essential oils such as eucalyptus, peppermint, or camphor near babies — these are respiratory irritants at high enough concentrations to cause breathing difficulty.
When to See a Doctor
Seek medical attention if: congestion is accompanied by fever in a baby under 3 months; breathing is laboured, rapid, or involves visible nostril flaring and chest retractions; your baby is refusing feeds due to inability to breathe and suck simultaneously; there is thick green or yellow mucus persisting beyond 10 days (possible secondary bacterial infection); there is any concern about breathing.
