Tummy Time: Why It Matters and How to Make It Fun

Tummy time is one of the simplest and most valuable activities for your baby's development. A few minutes a day helps build the strength they'll need for rolling, sitting and crawling — and with a playful approach, it can be a lovely shared moment too.

Why tummy time matters

Spending time on their front helps your baby strengthen the muscles of the neck, shoulders, arms and back. This strength lays the groundwork for future milestones and helps prevent flat spots from developing on the back of the head.

When and how to start

You can begin from the very early days with short sessions, building up gradually as your baby grows stronger. Start with just a minute or two, several times a day, and always supervise closely. Choose moments when your baby is awake, alert and content — not straight after a feed.

Simple ways to make it fun

•       Get down to your baby's level and chat or sing to encourage them.

•       Place a baby-safe mirror or colourful toy just in front of them.

•       Try lying back and resting your baby on your chest for a gentler start.

•       Use a rolled towel under the chest for a little extra support.

If your baby protests

Many babies find tummy time hard at first, and a little fussing is normal — it's hard work for them. Keep sessions short and positive, stop before they become too upset, and try again later. Frequent short bursts work better than one long stretch.

As your baby grows stronger, you'll see them lift their head higher, push up on their arms, and enjoy their new view of the world. A little daily tummy time, offered with patience and play, gives your baby a wonderful head start.
