The breast pump accessory market is enormous — and most of it is unnecessary. Here are the accessories that genuinely improve your pumping experience, and the ones you can safely skip.
Worth Every Dirham
Replacement flanges in multiple sizes: coming standard with one or two sizes and discovering mid-session that neither is correct is one of the most common pumping frustrations. Buying a set of different sizes from the start — and taking 10 minutes to properly measure your nipple before your first session — prevents weeks of reduced output and unnecessary pain.
A Hands-Free Pumping Bra
If you're using a traditional pump rather than a wearable, a hands-free pumping bra transforms the session. It holds the flanges in position without you having to hold them, freeing both hands for your phone, a book, or your baby. Look for one with a wide band for support and a zip or velcro front for quick access rather than pull-over styles.
A Quality Insulated Bag
For pumping at work or away from home, a purpose-made insulated pump bag that holds your pump unit, flanges, bottles, and ice packs in an organised way is significantly better than repurposing a general bag. The best pump bags also have a dedicated section for dirty parts between wash sessions.
Milk Storage Bags
Pre-sterilised, BPA-free milk storage bags with a self-standing design and a double-seal zip are worth the premium over cheaper versions. Bags that leak or fall over in the freezer waste milk and add unnecessary stress. Label each bag with date, volume, and the session time if you track morning vs evening output.
A Portable Power Bank
For the Turtees T10 and similar USB-C rechargeable wearable pumps, a high-capacity power bank extends your pumping day beyond what a single charge allows. A 10,000mAh power bank provides several additional full sessions, making it practical to pump during long trips, flights, or days without access to a wall outlet.
A Wet/Dry Bag for Dirty Parts
Between sessions at work, pump parts need to be stored hygienically until you can wash them. A silicone zip-seal wet/dry bag keeps used parts separate from clean items in your bag and prevents milk residue from contaminating other belongings. Clean the bag itself at the end of each day.
What You Don't Need
Expensive 'lactation-boosting' supplements without evidence (fenugreek, moringa capsules in tablet form — the evidence is weak and inconsistent). Pumping lubricants applied to flanges — if you need lubrication, your flange size is almost certainly wrong. Special pumping pillows — a regular pillow works. Breast massagers separate from your pump — hands-on compression during pumping is free and more effective.
