How to Clean and Care for Your Breast Pump

Keeping your breast pump clean is essential for your baby's safety and for the pump's longevity. The routine is straightforward once you've done it a few times — here's a simple approach you can rely on.

After every use

•       Take apart all the parts that came into contact with milk.

•       Rinse them in cool water first to remove milk residue.

•       Wash in warm, soapy water using a clean basin kept just for pump parts.

•       Rinse thoroughly and air-dry on a clean towel or drying rack.

Sterilising

For newborns and younger babies, sterilising parts once a day adds extra reassurance. You can use a steam steriliser, cold-water sterilising solution, or boiling, depending on what the manufacturer recommends. Always check your pump's instructions, as not every part is suitable for every method.

Caring for the motor and tubing

The motor unit should never be submerged in water; wipe it with a clean, slightly damp cloth instead. Tubing usually doesn't touch milk, but if you notice condensation or moisture inside, run the pump for a few minutes to dry it, and replace tubing if you ever see mould or persistent damp.

Storing safely

Once everything is completely dry, store the parts in a clean, covered container. Damp parts stored away can harbour bacteria, so drying fully is the most important step.

When to replace parts

Valves, membranes and seals wear over time and can affect suction. If you notice reduced performance, replacing these small parts often restores your pump to like-new. With a little daily care, your pump will serve you safely and reliably throughout your feeding journey.
