Many mothers worry about their milk supply at some point, and most of the time supply is perfectly adequate even when it doesn't feel that way. Still, there are gentle, proven steps you can take to support healthy milk production while you build your confidence.
1. Feed often and on demand
Milk works on supply and demand: the more your baby feeds, the more your body makes. Aim to feed whenever your baby shows early hunger cues rather than waiting for crying.
2. Check the latch
An effective latch helps your baby remove milk well, which signals your body to produce more. If feeds feel uncomfortable or your baby seems unsatisfied, revisit positioning.
3. Offer both breasts
Letting your baby finish the first breast before offering the second helps them reach the richer hind milk and encourages fuller drainage.
4. Rest whenever you can
Exhaustion can affect supply. Sleep when your baby sleeps where possible, and accept offers of help so you can focus on feeding and recovery.
5. Stay hydrated and nourished
Keep water nearby at every feed and eat regular, balanced meals. You don't need a special diet — simply enough fuel to support your body's hard work.
6. Try skin-to-skin
Holding your baby skin-to-skin releases hormones that support milk production and helps your baby feed more readily.
7. Know when to ask for help
If you're concerned about your baby's weight, wet nappies, or feeding, speak to your health visitor, GP, or a lactation consultant. Early, kind support makes all the difference, and asking is a sign of strength, not failure.
