Your baby's first bath can feel a little daunting, but with a calm approach and everything prepared in advance, it quickly becomes a lovely moment to share. Here's how to make it gentle and stress-free.
Before you start
Gather everything you need within arm's reach: a soft towel, a clean nappy, fresh clothes, and a clean cloth. Warm the room, and fill the bath with just a few centimetres of comfortably warm water. Always test the temperature with your elbow or wrist.
Step by step
• Undress your baby and wrap them in a towel to keep them warm.
• Gently clean their face first with a damp cloth, then their scalp.
• Lower them into the water slowly, supporting their head and shoulders with one arm.
• Use your free hand to gently cup water over their body — there's no need for soap in the early weeks.
• Keep the bath short, just a few minutes, especially at first.
Lifting out and drying
Lift your baby out carefully, lay them on the towel, and pat them dry, paying attention to the little creases at the neck, behind the knees and in the nappy area. Dress them promptly to keep them cosy.
Keep it calm
Babies pick up on your mood, so a slow, soothing voice and unhurried movements help them feel secure. If your baby cries, that's perfectly normal — many simply need time to get used to the sensation. Within a few baths, most little ones begin to enjoy the warmth and closeness.
Never leave your baby unattended in or near water, even for a moment. With these simple steps, bath time can become one of the gentlest parts of your day.
