Your baby's first year is a remarkable journey of growth and discovery. While every child develops at their own pace, knowing the general milestones can help you celebrate each new achievement. Here's a gentle month-by-month guide.
Months 1–3
In these early weeks, your baby begins to focus on faces, respond to sounds, and reward you with those first social smiles. They start to lift their head briefly during tummy time and become more alert during awake periods.
Months 4–6
• Reaching for and grasping objects.
• Rolling over in one or both directions.
• Laughing, babbling and enjoying interaction.
• Sitting with support and beginning to show readiness for solids.
Months 7–9
Your baby grows more mobile and curious. Many begin sitting unaided, passing objects between hands, and perhaps starting to crawl or shuffle. Babbling becomes more expressive, and familiar faces bring delight while strangers may prompt a little wariness.
Months 10–12
• Pulling up to stand and cruising along furniture.
• First words or clear attempts at them.
• Using fingers to pick up small pieces of food.
• Perhaps those very first independent steps.
A gentle reminder
These milestones are guides, not deadlines. Babies reach them across a wide and perfectly normal range, and arriving a little earlier or later rarely means anything is wrong. Focus on steady progress rather than exact timing.
If you ever have concerns about your baby's development, your health visitor or GP is there to reassure and support you. Above all, enjoy this fleeting, wonderful year — each small step is worth celebrating.
