Bringing your baby home for the first time is a moment full of love — and, often, a fair amount of uncertainty. The first week can feel like a blur, so here's a gentle, honest look at what to expect and how to look after yourself through it.
Everything feels new — and that's normal
Feeding, nappies, sleep and soothing all take practice, and it's completely normal to feel unsure at first. You and your baby are learning each other. Give yourself permission to find your feet without expecting to have it all worked out straight away.
What to expect
• Frequent feeding, often every couple of hours, day and night.
• Lots of nappy changes and unpredictable sleep.
• A baby who wants to be held very often — this is normal and comforting for them.
• Big emotions for you, from joy to tearfulness, as your hormones shift.
Looking after you
Your recovery matters just as much as your baby's care. Rest whenever you can, eat regular meals, keep water close by, and don't be shy about accepting help with cooking, cleaning and errands. Sleep when your baby sleeps, even briefly.
Keep visitors gentle
Well-meaning visitors are lovely, but you're allowed to keep things short and quiet in the early days. Protect your rest and your bonding time without guilt.
When to seek support
Trust your instincts. If you're worried about your baby's feeding, breathing or wellbeing, contact your health visitor or GP. And if low or anxious feelings linger beyond the early days, please reach out — support is there, and asking for it is a sign of good mothering.
Take it one feed, one nap and one cuddle at a time. You're doing wonderfully.
